Haumana Live-Aboard Cruises to
Rangiroa & Tikehau Atolls, Tahiti
Tetiaroa and Fakarava Islands, Tahiti -- SUSPENDED!!

Rangiroa & Tikehau Atolls, are vast sea aquariums, offering fly anglers a well-stocked and preserved fishing environment with the guarantee of great catches.
The favorite fish of fly-fishers are plentiful and never-ending schools of bonefish, many varieties of jack, trevally, barracuda, milkfish and many other species. Over 450 different species of fish have been documented in Rangiroa's lagoon and Jacques Cousteau's research group declared that Tikehau lagoon contained the highest concentration of fish in all of the Tuamotu atolls.

So in order to be able to tell stories about all those that didn't get away, fish the flats first, hit the beaches for some casting and then troll the drop-off outside the reef while keeping your eyes open for a boiling ocean surface where skipjacks or a 150 pound yellow fin tuna might be in a feeding frenzy.

SUSPENDED!
Tetiaroa
is a privately owned island, owned by none other than Marlon Brando, who bought this island shortly after filming ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’. Marlon now has nothing to do with this island but his ‘Tahitian Wife’ Terita, now runs the little hotel there.

Tetiaroa must offer the best chance to catch trophy bonefish. The bonefish there are incredible with good numbers of what must be the world’s biggest bonefish. To date the average size of the bonefish landed is close to 8 pounds. The largest bonefish landed so far, that was weighed, is a beautiful bonefish which weighed 13 lbs. Adding to the bone-fishing is excellent numbers of Trevally, some Milkfish and many other tropical species. For anglers wishing to go beyond the flats and reefs, the blue water fishing is also excellent with such species as Wahoo, Marlin, Dorado(mahi-mahi) and huge Yellowfin Tuna.

The Habitat in Tetiaroa is stunning. Tetiaroa is comprised of 12 small motu (islands) surrounded entirely by a protective coral reef. Each motu is surrounded by white sand flats, all of which are hard packed and easily waded. In total there are 14 sq km of flats, more than enough for the (strictly limited to 4) numbers of fishermen that can visit Tetiaroa each week. In fact for ‘after hours’ fishing there is a flat 1 min’s walk from your bedroom.

Fakarava Atoll, a huge atoll, served from Tahiti by 6 flights per week, is measuring 37 miles long and 15 miles wide is situated in the Tuamotu Group and lies 280 miles to the North-East of Tahiti. This atoll was recently classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, attesting to its natural beauty and almost untouched lagoon. Fakarava Atoll has 2 passes to the open ocean. These passes are the route the endless flats of Fakaraca for species such as Bonefish and Trevally. But are also an interesting stop at the end of the flats day and spend the last hour(s) chasing Dorado, Tuna, Wahoo and even Marlin. The northern pass for example is one mile wide. The flats are a fly fisher's dream. Some have been discovered already while the most of it are waiting for it. This is truly wilderness fishing for Bonefish, Trevally and Long Nosed Emperors. The flats of Fakarava Atoll are huge and endless. The flats range from palm edged sand banks to pancake flats in the middle of the lagoon. Bonefish are present on the flats most days of the year. The average size of Fakarava's Bonefish is around 5 lbs and several Trevally species are mostly always present. Inside the lagoon you see at on many occasions hundreds of birds chasing at baitfish. These baitfish are chased up to the surface of schooling Trevally, Jacks or Skipjack Tunas. On calm days it is even possible to visit the nearby island of Toau, another island with good numbers of Bonefish patrolling the flats. A local fast fishing boat can be hired for the one hour trip to Toau an interesting island to visit for the day.

On Fakarava we have two options for accommodations to choose from.

MAI TAI DREAM
This four star, all inclusive beach resort offers 30 luxury bungalows. The entire bungalows feature a private terrace, ceiling fan, and all the modern conveniences including telephone and television. The hotel's lagoon front bar and restaurant provide spectacular sunset views, and the restaurant serves excellent fare with a full bar service and excellent wine list. Your guide can meet you right on the dock, and deliver you right back to the Hotel at the end of the fishing day. If you want top comfort, then this is the right option for you.

PENSION HAVAIKI
The accommodation of Pension Havaiki consists of simple wooden framed local style bungalows built among tall coconut palms on a white sandy beach. Locally made furniture decorates the bungalows, each of which has a shady terrace and stunning views over the turquoise waters of the lagoon. Great meals are taken in the main house, and a bar provides for the necessary refreshments after a long days fishing. Pension Havaiki has an 24-hour electricity and solar systems which provide hot-water for the showers. All major credit cards are accepted.
Both accommodation options are situated on a fine white beach on the outskirts of Rotoava Village in Fakarava. One of the most pleasant things about a stay at Fakarava is the lack of mosquitoes which is normally plague on tropical islands.

The flats consist of firm sand ranging from white to light tan, meaning little or no need to fish from boats. All of the fishing and flats can be accessed on foot without the added problems of fishing from a skiff. The bonefish average over 7 lbs with plenty of shots at double digit bones possible in a day. So far the biggest bone landed is 13 lbs, with many larger bones lost to the coral. While there are not the huge numbers you expect from places like Christmas Island or the Seychelles, the fish are bigger and stronger. However an experienced angler can still expect to land between 1-2 dozen bones per day. The range of tidal fall and rise is really only a foot or two so the flats remain covered with water all day long.
