Sandy and Clackamas Rivers, Oregon

The Sandy and Clackamas Rivers are two of Portland's closest and best steelhead rivers. Both are nearly urban streams, yet a short distance from downtown Portland you can find yourself in a pocket of remoteness in a little over a half hour drive.
Both the Clackamas and the Sandy host both winter and summer runs of steelhead which provide good numbers of fish between the 8-12 pound range. Summer runs are best pursued between July and September while the winter run is best from January to April.
As with many rivers that are best known for steelhead, the summer runs are going to be the busiest times to fish as the weather is nicer. Also note that the larger fish are going to usually be caught in the winter as well so if you can stand a little cold water, rain/sleet and shorter days, the winter steelheading on these two rivers can be quite a find.
