EWA guide Mark Freda with a nice SRC caught in the south Sound the other day on a Foul Free Herring pattern. Bait continues to be all over the beaches and the fishing as a result has been holding steady at GREAT!!

A new feature of our reports page, you can click on the cfs of each river and be taken directly to that rivers' USGS page for the most updated river levels.
2/3/05 Black Canyon of the Gunnison River , Colorado
629 cfs @ below Crystal Res.
Flows are up a little bit but water is still in great shape. With this time of year, there are few anglers willing to brave the sometimes very cold temps to hike into the canyon. By making the trek, you will often times be rewarded with not only the river to yourself, but also some very willing participants. Nymphing is going to be your primary mode with maybe an occassional midge hatch coming off mid day. Stripping some streamers will also move some browns if the water isn't too cold.
Favorite flies for this season: Stone fly nymphs, copper johns, princes, pheasant tails, BWO's, JJ specials, egg patterns, San Juan worms, WD40's, micro may nymphs, baetis nymphs, lightning bugs, Morrishs' Anato-may, small hare's ears.
2/3/05

San Miguel River, Colorado
Ice cfs @ Placerville
At this time of year, the majority of the Miguel will fish pretty good in the slower runs where ice hasn't taken over the river. Look for deeper pools and over-hanging ice on deeper pools to get nymphs under. The better guides at Telluride Angler will know where the water is accessible for fishing for most of the winter.
Favorite flies for this season: Stone fly nymphs, bitch creeks, copper johns, LaFontaine pupas, princes, sprouts, Griffiths Gnats, Para Adams, BWO's.
2/3/05 Uncompahgre River, Colorado
Ice cfs @ Colona
The region is having a pretty cold winter this year. Ice is being recorded at this station as well which is sort of unusual unless winter has really set in. There is still some good fishing to be had closer to Montrose where temps are usually a little warmer. Nymphing is going to be your primary mode with maybe an occassional midge hatch coming off mid day.
Favorite flies for this season: Stone fly nymphs, bitch creeks, aggravator, 20 incher, copper johns, princes, micro may nymphs, Morrishs' Anato-may, WD40's, midges, small para adams, BWO's.
3/5/05

Puget Sound, Washington
46° water temp. @ Southworth
Current Seattle Tide
Current Puget Sound Winds

Water temps continue to rise as spring sets in around the sound. South sound still has fish active on the surface and definitely within casting range from shore. Smaller patterns are going to work best for now until some of the salmon smolt make their way into the salt from the river systems. If you need ideas for fly patterns, check out www.pugetsoundflyfishing.com.
Favorite flies for this season: West's Smelt, West's Herring, Southworth Special, Herring Popper, Reverse Spiders, Morrish's Small Fry, Rolled Muddler, Silly Leg Spider and Euphasid patterns, Saltwater deer hair dry flies, Chernobyl ants/hoppers, Miyawaki's Popper.

2/3/05 Lake Nunnally and basin lakes, Washington
The season is closed for many of the eastern lakes but does remain open on some of them. Check the regulations book for open lakes and figure that Chironomids are most likely going to be the game. While on westside lakes, streamers as well as chironomids are working well for both rainbows and browns. Try Pass Lake in the evenings for the bigger fish, and check out Beda Lake on the eastside. With the warmer temps, some of the lakes that are open have been fishing quite well for this time of year. Chironmids or go home!
Favorite flies for this season: Hale Bopp Leaches, Thin Mints, olive buggers, brown buggers, snow cones, chromers, bionic worms, midges, blood worms.
2/25/05 Cowlitz River, Washington
4030 cfs @ below Mayfield Reservoir 42° water temp.
Much of the winter steelhead run is complete for the moment down here. There are still a few fish around but nowhere near the numbers anglers we were seeing just a few weeks ago. With water levels so low, medium sink tips or heavy flies with floating lines are working well. Too heavy finds your fly on the bottom more often than not.
Favorite flies for this season: Bunny Leeches, Egg Sucking Leeches, Flatwing General Practitioners, Skunks, Purple Perils, Skykomish Sunrises. Mickey Finns, spiders, reverse spiders, orange soft hackles, hares ears, rolled muddlers, woolly buggers for SRC's, pink and chartreuse flies for the springers and coho.
2/25/05 Yakima River, Washington
868 cfs @ Umtanum 34° water temp.
The weather coming in will certainly help the cold weather and water conditions on the Yak. The past couple days have already seen markedly better fishing than just a few days ago with more and more fish finally coming to the surface with some regularity for Skwala adults.
Favorite flies for this season: Stone fly nymphs, brown and mottled streamers, soft hackles, san juan worms, hare's ear nymphs, Bloody Mary's, lightning bugs,, x-caddis, baetis and BWO patterns, princes, JJ specials, Tekillya's, Anato-may nymphs.
2/25/05

Skykomish River, Washington
1350 cfs @ Goldbar 36 ° water temp.
With water low and clear and a few fish being caught, the WDFW has again decided to close the Sky from March 1st to 1st of June. Again, get out and fish, despite the low water and clarity, there might just be a fish awaiting your arrival in the last few days.
Favorite flies for this season: Small speys, Coal Car's as opposed to Cop Cars, Purple Perils, Olive Egg Sucking Bunny Leeches, Starlight Leach, Flatwing General Practitioners, Skykomish Sunrises, various colored skunks. Mickey Finns, spiders, reverse spiders, rolled muddlers, woolly buggers for SRC's and flesh flies for Dollies.

2/27/05 Snoqualmie River, Washington
879 cfs @ Snoqualmie
332 cfs @ Tanner on Middle Fork 38° water temp.
The mainstem Snoqualmie will close the end of the month actually, as it does every year. The forks will remain open however for small trout fishing which with the low snow pack should be fishing well when the water warms up a little bit more.
Favorite flies for this season: Para Adams, lightning bugs, stimulators, copper johns, skunks, purple perils, small marabous, egg sucking leaches and similar patterns for steelhead. Mickey Finns, reverse spiders, and other streamer patterns for the SRC's.
2/25/05 Skagit River, Washington
5120 cfs @ Marblemount
Skagit has been producing some nice fish lately, both Dolly and wild steelhead. Water is so low and clear both above and below the Sauk that longer leaders and fishing the early morning and later evenings are going to be huge advantages right now.
Favorite flies for this season: Bunny Leeches, Egg Sucking Leeches, Flatwing General Practitioners, Flash flies, clousers of various colors, Skagit Minnows, Marabous all in various colors and flesh flies for Dollies.
2/25/05

Sauk River, Washington
308 cfs @ near Darrington
1460 cfs @ near Sauk, WA
Water is low and clear, as are all the rivers in the region right now. There are a few fish around but not many. Dolly have been productive but the steelhead have been fewer between. With water levels what they are, drift boats down the river will have difficulty with gravel bars so be aware of this. Pontoons would be better choice. Fish will still come up look for them to likely come up more quickly or find new lies.
Favorite flies for this season: Bunny Leeches, Egg Sucking Leeches, Flatwing General Practitioners, Skagit Minnows, Marabous all in various colors and flesh flies for Dollies.

2/25/05

North Fork Stillaguamish River, Washington
809 cfs @ Arlington
The Stilly will again close for the coming catch and release season beginning on March 1st. With this in mind, get out and fish it if you must. Not a whole lot going on but a fish here and there being caught recently.
Favorite flies for this season: Small Egg Sucking Leeches, Flatwing General Practitioners, Skunks, Bombers, Waller Wakers, Skykomish Sunrises, Purple Perils and purple/orange/black spey flies.

2/3/05

Olympic Peninsula, Washington
Sol Duc River, Bogachiel River
Hoh
1930 cfs @ Highway 101
Queets 2750 cfs @ Clearwater
Bogachiel @ La Push
Water is back down again and in good shape. Hatchery run is all but done and now the wild fish will make their way into the systems. As with some of the Puget Sound river systems, a few fish already have shown up, hopefully this is a good sign.
Favorite flies for this season: Bunny Leeches, Egg Sucking Leeches, Flatwing General Practitioners, Skagit Minnows, Marabous all in various colors. Mickey Finns, spiders, reverse spiders, rolled muddlers, woolly buggers for SRC's and flesh flies for Dollies.

2/25/05 North Umpqua and mainstem Umpqua Rivers, Oregon
1510 cfs @ Winchester Dam
Fish Counts Over Winchester Dam
Water is low and clear for the most part and there are some steelhead around. Look for some rain and change in weather to positively affect the fishing over the new few days. More fish continue to come over the dam each day meaning the fly water will see more fish in the near future as well.
Favorite flies for this season: Olive wooly buggers, skunks, green butt skunks, purple perils, general practitioners, surface waking flies also.
2/25/05 Grande Ronde River, Oregon
1050 cfs @ Troy
This is likely my favorite time of year to fish this river, especially when the weather is like it is right now. Warmer air means warmer water and more active fish. There is hardly anyone fishing right now and there are plenty of relaxed fish around. Sink tips in the deeper holes and runs or longer leaders and heavy flies, your choice, either will catch fish right now down.
Favorite flies for this season: Leeches, Comets, egg sucking leaches, marabous depending on water levels and color.
2/25/05 John Day River, Oregon
735 cfs @ McDonald Ferry
Fish Counts Over John Day Dam
By this time of year, this river is about done with its run of steelhead. The majority of the fish will be way up in the system. Water is much higher than we recommend for fishing at this time as well. There are likely still some fish around Rock Creek but by now we have quit guiding here and are now focusing on other rivers like the Sandy. Come May, look for the focus to be back on the bass and warm weather.
Favorite flies for this season: Egg sucking leaches, marabous, prawns, bunny leaches.
2/25/05 McKenzie River and Willamette River, Oregon
1060 cfs McKenzie @ Walterville
Fish Counts Over Willamette Falls
The Mac doesn't really get a winter run of fish, although some strays from the Willamette will find their way into the river occassionally. Trout fishing right now is probably as good as it could be for this time of year with the warmer than normal weather. Swinging nymphs through likely runs and holes will still be the best bet for trout right now although some midge and BWO activity is happening.

4680 cfs Willamette @ Harrisburg
The Willamette is still one of the biggest sleeper rivers in the PNW for steelhead. Reports of huge numbers of fish over the falls in Oregon City prove there are a lot of fish in here. Even so, finding several nice runs to yourself is rarely a problem, even in the middle of urban settings like Eugene. Typical wet fly swing is perfect for these gravel bar runs that have great current, nice depth, perfect water speed and they hold fish to boot. This said, still fish being caught in here right now and the spring run will be on its way anytime now. Report provided by The Caddis Fly Shop in Eugene.
Favorite flies for this season: Pheasant Tails, princes, micro mayflies, woolly buggers, para adams, midge patterns, egg sucking leaches, bunny leaches, steelhead princes, stonefly nymphs, marabous.
2/3/05

Deschutes River, Oregon
4740 cfs @ Moody
Fish Counts Over Bonneville Dam
Waether has warmed up quite a bit, as it has everywhere, making the trout fishing quite good lately. Stripping streamers and nymphing will be perfect for right now.
Favorite flies for this season: Stoneflies, lightning bugs, pheasant tails, princes, leaches, Brads Brat, Boss, heavy wire skunks, and Purple Perils.

2/3/05 Big Lost River, Idaho
89 cfs @ below McKay Res.
Even with the warmer temps, the huge midge hatches and fish responding to them have only partly happened. The midge are around but the fish are yet to really focus on them. As Feb. continues along, this will definitely happen eventually.
Favorite flies for this season: Stone fly nymphs, pheasant tails, black copper johns, princes, midge pupae, JJ specials, caddis, turks tarantula.
2/3/05 Rock Creek, Montana
180 cfs @ Clinton
Not much has really changed since the last report, flies the same, water very nearly the same, report close to the same. Very good nymphing on the creek right now as well as some pretty consistent streamer action on the lower 1/3. There are lots of browns from the river that're still up the creek at this point and both nymph rigs and streamers have been moving lots of these larger fish. We've also been having some good fishing on the upper reaches of the creek, too, but if you don't have to drive that far, why do it? Report provided by The Kingfisher Fly Shop.
Favorite flies for this season: San Juan worms, princes, pheasant tails, lightning bugs, copper johns, stone fly nymphs, brassies,
2/3/05 Key West , Florida
Permit are back on the flats. Despite water temperatures hovering in the high 60's the past few day, we have been finding good numbers of permit on the flats around Key West. With east, southeast winds and warmer temperatures predicted for the next couple of days and nights, I would not be surprised to see tarpon moving into the shallows, as well. We are due for a good warm front.Report provided by the Saltwater Angler in Key West.

For those who read all our reports, here is some disturbing info for you to read. Click anywhere on this paragraph and read the issues Florida is tackling right now if you think we are the only state with a bunch of bufoons in charge!
Favorite flies for this season: Bonefish Bitters, crazy charlies, gotchas, Cockroaches, Schminnows, polar fiber minnows.
12/17/04 Cape Cod, Massachusetts
We had a push of stripers the past three weeks along our beaches. Most of the stripers were in the three to five pound class with some in the 10 pound class.  After the last full moon the large numbers of sandeels that the stripers have been feeding on have move which is normal.  The stripers followed but some have stayed behind and guys are having fun hooking up.  You will find that most of the fish that are running the beaches are in three to six foot of depth. I found gazillions of six inch sandeels offshore with stripers in the twenty pound class and they were actively feeding on the bait.   Find some current, fish it with a floating line and a L&L special and you will have no problem hooking up.  Reports provided by Capt. Todd Murphy.(wellhooked@comcast.net)
Favorite flies for this season: Flatwing baitfish, Half and Half, Big Bunker flies.
2/3/05 Talachulitna River, Alaska
Last summer was our second dry summer in a row. Low snow fall the
winter before kept our spring run off to a minimum. Thankfully we had a cooler summer, so our low waters didn't warm up too much. Low water
means better fishing for us at Talaheim Lodge. Our low rivers can be easily waded and fished by fly fishermen who are beginners at the sport.
Rainbow fishing started off in the early spring and never slowed down.
Our trout averaged 16-18 inches with lots of fish in the 24 inch plus
range. By mid July we saw many 50 fish days, even better for anglers
that could cover water. I only hope that the trout fishing continues to get better as we have seen over the past five years. Talaheim Lodge
counts king salmon in the Talachulitna and several other local streams by helicopter. The "Tal" has seen almost 10,000 fish the past two years. The fish and game's goal is just under 3000 fish, so our runs are very healthy.
Report provided by Mark Miller of Talaheim Lodge.

Mark Miller, owner and head guide of Talaheim Lodge will be at our booth for a short time on Friday and Saturday during the upcoming Fly Fishing Show in Bellevue, WA on Feb. 11-13. Drop us a line if you want to have a moment to talk with him personally.

Kanektok River, Alaska
The Kings showed up a little early this year and are already about done in the lower river. All this means is the other species are close behind and the trout are moving in and following the salmon up river.
2/3/05 Houma, Louisiana
Fishing has been good and with fall on it's way it is sure to get even better. Fall is that glorious time of year when the blue-bird skies often stand watch over calm waters. The flat waters are only disturbed by cruising bait fish and at times, the tails and backs of hungry fish. This is a time of year when the fish instinctively begin to school up. Schools of fish can be seen waking along the banks in search of a meal. Fall often produces the year's most aggressive fish. With mild temperatures and dry air, fall is great for fishing and glorious for the fishermen.
For info, contact Capt. Danny Ayo at www.flyfishlouisiana.com.
Favorite flies for this season: Merkin Crab, Barr's Crab, carpet crab, Wobbler, clousers.
2/3/05 Various Rivers of Iceland
My favourite river of all time, the Midfjardara is still so full of fish, that the oldest anglers tells us that they have never seen anything like it. Many of you know the river, but I went there late August and looked down from the bridge in Vesturá river (Tunhylur beat) and saw about 200 salmon there, just in one beat! Then a friend of mine was fishing there today and he alone caught 17 salmon and missed more in just one day - and mind you, we are in September. Fish was caught on red and black Francis (small flies), sunray shadow and Snaelda The river is reaching 1800 salmons and there are still some days left. For the last 6 days about 200 salmon have been caught - fly only of course.
The Ranga rivers are both better than ever before. East is up to 2.800 salmon and the West is over 2.600 salmon , together they are 5.400 salmon, after few days they will for sure be over 6000 salmon, as daily catch from the East now is 50 salmon and 20-30 salmon from the West, this will be a record catch in Iceland (again) Blanda was just great this summer and anglers were catching big salmon there this summer. Still Blanda was so full of grilse that the lucky June anglers in 2005 should be preparing for some treat. The river was the record river for the first months of the season, until "monsters" like the Ranga rivers got in gear.
1/19/05 Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa, Mexico
Mid January has been fish very well for nearly all species with tons of sails being raised, jacks, roosters, snapper, Spanish mackerel and bonito have been most cooperative lately. Those fishing inshore have been seeing between 5-20 fish of varying species a day and those going for blue water have been seeing no less than 4 sails raised per day, and landing at least half them them, even with fly equipment.
Favorite flies for this season: Decievers, large poppers, Boilermakers, Master Blasters, Sar-Mul-Macs, Sea Ducers and Sliders.
1/3/05 Cozumel, Mexico
As of late, the weather has been pretty bad in the area making for colder water in the lagoons and spreading the bones out and hard to find. Look for weather to turn around here shortly and regain warmer water temps. Report provided by professional guide, Alex Martin. To fish with Alex while in the area, drop us a line or give us a call or drop us an email.
Favorite flies for this season: Bonefish Bitters, crazy charlies, gotchas, Tan Dandy, Yucatan Specials, and Agent Oranges for the bones while Merkins Crab, Barr's Crab.
12/30/04 Alphonse, Farquhar, Amirantes Groups, Seychelles
With the recent news on the tsunami in the Indonesian region, anglers have been wondering about the condition of the Seychelles. At this time, there is confirmation that the Alphonse Island Lodge is in good shape and sustained minimal to no damage from the tsunami. Other islands did receive damage and relief crews are working in those areas right now.
2/3/05 Los Jardines de la Reina, Cuba
Located about 50 miles off the southern coast of Cuba, this national park is one of the last great fly fishing frontiers left on earth. As the US congress decides on over-turning the Helmes-Burton Law, which would return normal relations with Cuba, you should try to get here before this changes. Average days for bones, ranging from 3-6 pounds, is between 20-40 per day! While most anglers think tarpon are born weighing over 100 pounds, the smaller, "baby" tarpon in the 20-40 pound range are the fun ones, that don't take hours to land. And permit litter the waters here as well, ranging from 15-30 pounds. These fish haven't seen hundreds of flies or even tens of flies, therefore catching is almost alway great on typical patterns used both in Florida and the Bahamas.
1/31/05 Quepos, Golfito, Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica
They are here! The quantity and quality of fish that everyone hopes to get while in Costa Rica has arrived. You name it, they are around and biting. Tuna, Dorado, Sails, Marlin, Rooster and all other regular game fish are on the bite and this would be a fantastic time to book a spur of the moment trip to the region.
Favorite flies for this season: Decievers, large poppers, Boilermakers, Sliders, Master Blasters, Sea-Habits, Sea Ducers and Sar-Mul-Macs.
2/3/05

Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia
Opala, Pymta, Icha, Tikhaya, Kolpakova Rivers
As the season comes to an end in Russia, anglers and guides leaving the area are leaving while there are tons of fish in most of the rivers in the region. Both numbers and size of fish were all in very good shape this year. This may have been one of the best seasons over there in years. Large rainbows taking all sorts of fly variations from streamers to small dry flies to huge mouse patterns. We look forward to next season already!
Favorite flies for this season: Rajah, Zonkers, Battle Creek, Pink Sparkler, Flash Fly, Mouse, Bomber, Bitch Creek, Wulff, Black Gnat, Caddis, Wooly Worm, Egg Sucking Leach.

2/3/05 Tofino, British Columbia
As of late, the fishing has been amazing up here! The larger coho are feeding all over the place on herring and pilcher. Both bucktailing and casting over bait balls have been very productive. Average size of fish has been around 8-10 pounds with a few smaller ones and definitely some larger ones as well.

When most people think of the Tofino and Clayoquot Sound region of BC, they traditionally think of Coho and Blackmouth in the salt. However, one thing to keep in mind is that there is some amazing fly in only wild rainbow trout lakes that will begin to fish great in May through October and the spring run of steelhead on some of the smaller, lesser known rivers is heating up. Beautiful wild steelhead on small uncrowded rivers. Interested, drop us line or give us a call!!
2/3/05 Chrismas Island, Kiribati, South Pacific
There have been some amazing weeks and some slow weeks in the past couple of months. Some weeks have seen anglers having 20 fish days without having ever bonefished before, while one week had some experienced saltwater anglers having to work to get their 10 fish a day! Seems to have come back to a more normal state now and fish are feeding quite well and many schools are seen every day. Christmas Island Special, Crazy Charlies, Bonefish Bitters, and Clouser Minnow are all working for the bones currently with tan, off white and light pink being the favorite colors. Red and white poppers and large Deceivers are working well for the BIG Giant Trevally.
Favorite flies for this season: Bonefish Bitters, crazy charlies, gotchas, Tan Dandy, Pink Sands, Paris Flat bonefish fly, Greenie Weenie, mini Puff and Flats Master for bones. Large deceivers, Boilermakers, Reef Demons, poppers, baitfish patterns and clousers for the Trevally and Lemons.
2/3/05 River Spey, River Dee, River Tweed and Findhorn River, Scotland
The 2004 season finally comes to a close in this part of the Highlands of Scotland and just like it started in early February; it went out with a bang. These past few weeks have been very busy for me and very productive for my fishing guests on the Findhorn and Dee Rivers. On his first visit to Scotland, Clyde Olson from the U.S.A., a very keen Speycaster, was really delighted to hook into his first Atlantic salmon from the Durris Stream at Park on the River Dee on September 16th. Unfortunately the river rose after heavy rain to 31 inches and was quite dirty and the fishing became a little slower over the next couple of days. This report graciously provided by ghillie, Ian Neale. Check out his site at www.speycaster.net.
Favorite flies for this season: Gary Dog, Munro Killer, Dunkeld, Stoats Tail, Cascade, Ally Shrimp variations, Willie Gunn, Purple Haze, and Norwegian patterns like Temple Dog and Sunray Shadow.
2/3/05 Placencia, Belize
Fishing has been very productive lately with large tarpon around, plenty of permit and of course the year around presence of bones. Tarpon at a couple of the places we work with have been boated in the 140 lb. class and many anglers having mulitiple shots as schools of permit each day.
Favorite flies for this season: Merkin Crabs, Crazy Charlies, Moe Heads, feather crabs, McCrab, Barr's Crabs for the bones and permit, Cockroach, decievers, barred tarpon fly Black Death, Chartreuse Decievers, Gotchas, Tarpon Glo's, epoxy squid Chico's Shallow Water Tarpon, Stu Apte and surf eels for the Tarpon.
This report provided by Capt. Charlie Leslie of Kingfisher's Tarpon Caye Lodge.
2/3/05 Grand Bahama, Andros and Abacos, Bahamas
After the hurricane season ended, it was only a matter of a couple weeks before the flats were completely back to normal and ready for fishing. The majority of the lodges and guides we fish with regularly down here were barely affected by the hurricane. This is still the place to go for big bones, and while most believe that the fish are smarter here, some are but there are a lot of dumb ones too and they are larger than Belize and Mexico on average! Favorite flies for this season: Gotchas, Crazy Charlies, Bonefish Puffs, Chili Peppers, Moose Turds, Borski's Super Swimming Shrimp, smaller clousers, in tan for the bones, poppers, Cuda Killers, Popovics Banger and Candy Eels for barracuda, clousers for jacks, Veverka's Golden Mantis, Borski's Chernobyl Crab and yarn crabs for the Permit.
7/20/04 Amazon River Region, Brazil
The water levels were a little bit high, but dropping daily with only 14 of the 16 guests actually fishing, there were over 1,500 Peacock Bass caught! Weeks 2 and 3 just completed were even better. Numerous fish, from 20-24 lbs., have been landed with excellent numbers of fish in the 8-12# class. A lot of really big fish, over 20# being caught daily as well. This is unreal considering the Peacocks' desire to retreat into trees and brush almost immediately after being hooked. This is an amazing trip for those looking for a fishing trip that is truly different this year.
Favorite flies for this season: Big surface poppers.
2/3/05 Patagonia, Chile/Argentina
The season has gotten off to a great start down south with decent weather, and it will only get better through the next couple months. Rio Azul opens the first week of January and still has a few great dates open due to cancellations for the season. Check our hosted travel page for dates.
Favorite flies for this season: Chernobyl Ants and Hoppers, Mazuka, Ziwi, Gaucho, Galunga's, Turks Tarantulas, wooly sculpins, Pancora, Terranasty's, muddlers, mice, lemmings, JJ Specials, bunny leeches and other big dry flies and streamers.
1/31/04 New Zealand
Lower South Island -New Zealand
Plenty of rain during the Christmas period kept many rivers flooded and anglers off the banks. Fishing was confined to the lake fed rivers which remained clear and low providing the gin clear water usually associated with this time of year. Once again the high country rivers cleared quickly and were soon back producing fish mainly to small aquatic flies and nymphs fished upstream presented to sighted fish. With the weather now turning hot and dry (20-30 deg.) these are in peak condition without having the normal fishing pressure associated with the holiday period. With this warmer February weather we can also expect big hatches of cicadas and great dry fly action. Some high country lakes have been fishing extremely well already with browns in the 3-4 pound range taking the abundant terrestrials. As the fish in the rivers switch onto taking more food from the surface, bigger fish will begin to show. This time of year is the peak of the New Zealand fishing down South, with visble fish rising from the depths of emerald green pools to suck in likely looking imitations. With a hot sun on your back what could be better? Popular seasonal patterns include, deer hair cicada, royal wulf, muddler minnow, best fished on size 8 hooks with size 10 preferd for the high country where the species of cicadas are a little smaller. Report provided by Neil Robinson of Hooked on New Zealand.
