Queets
River, Washington
The
Queets River might be the most beautiful and scenic of all the Olympic
Peninsula rivers. This 50 mile long gem runs almost its entire course
through the Olympic National Park protecting the rainforest surrounding
the river. The last few miles then runs through reservation land
until it reaches the Pacific.
Winter
months call fly anglers from all over to the Queets not only for
its numerous and large native steelhead but also for the opportunity
to be alone with just the fish and the river. These large natives
begin their up river migration in January and usually end sometime
in late March. The Queets also hosts a recognizable sized run of
summer steelhead which are best pursued during the fall months.
One will occassionally beach large Dolly Varden as well while swinging
flies for steelhead in both summer and winter. Chinook and Coho
salmon make themselves present each year also binging many anglers
to the river.
As you make you way towards the rainforest engulfed upper river,
long meandering runs give way to more broken pocket water. This
portion of the river holds native trout as well as char.
Native
steelhead on the Queets can run as large as 20 pounds, making for
a heart-pounding, rod-bending adventure, year after year.
