Chum salmon fry begin to arrive in the Sound in early late February and early March.


A Pink salmon fry which arrive as adults in odd years and come back as fry in the even ones.


Sand Lance which can have a wide range in length depending on the time of year and location.


While dry this fly doesn't look much like the real thing, when wet, the colors on the back blend and the fly becomes more streamlined, resembling the natural Sand Lance quite well.

This is a great example of why we fish white flies with a little silver in them alot.


Most anglers aren't aware of the different personalities of bait schools. Herring in schools like this will allow you to wade right into them where salmon fry will flee well before you get close.


Another misconception of baitfish in Puget Sound is that they only achieve a certain size. This herring is in excess of 6 inches long. Bottom line, big flies will work!


A nice 10 inch herring caught at Southworth recently. These guys will take fairly large flies as well, Puget Sound tarpon! Also note the coloration in its back, a great tell-tale sign of colors to use in tying your own flies.

Isopods are another great source of food for roaming SRC's and are well represented by smaller bonefish flies.




On healthy beaches where you find an abundance of these guys under the larger rocks, typically you have found a beach where cutts will be prevelant as well.



Kelp shrimp are a main staple for SRC's.


Large Sand Shrimp are a regular food source for both cutts and resident salmon.


A Polychaete, or specie of worm found in and around kelp, eel grass and rocks in the Sound.
