Pitt River Lodge, British Columbia
Imagine a pristine river in an area so difficult to get to, that most anglers have to fly in by helicopter or boat an hour across a lake and then hike for miles to arrive at the best water to fish. You have just imagined staying and fishing with the staff at Pitt River Lodge.
Pitt River Lodge is located at the very end of Pitt Lake, one of the largest fluctuating tidal lakes in North America. It is the only lodge and fishing facility on the river and offers unbelievable fishing and comfortable accommodations at a very reasonable price.
Lodges in Alaska are set up with similar accommodations and similar fishing opportunities and are several plane flights away and most are very expensive. Pitt River Lodge gives you the feel of being in a remote locale with a beautiful river and healthy runs of both steelhead and sockeye as well as very large bull trout, resident rainbow and cutthroat trout.
Your trip starts by arriving at Grant Narrows Park on the southern end of Pitt Lake, one of the largest tidal fluctuating lakes in North America. Owner and head guide Dan Gerak will meet you and will be your captain on an hour long journey by boat to the dock on the other end of the lake where you are then driven to the lodge.
Once at the lodge you will be shown your room and given a tour of the lodge and its facilities. After that you may wander the grounds, play pool with other guests or wet a line down at the river, a 100 yard walk from the lodge. Dinner is usually around 7pm and consists of a variety of meats, salads and vegetables as well as home baked breads.
Mornings start fairly early with a 6am wake up knock on your door, followed by breakfast around 7am. Fishing can range from full and half day floats on one of the various sections available or upper Pitt River walk and wade trips.
The float trips are the best way to get a feel for the geography of the river. Lengths of the floats vary from 4-8 miles. Whichever section you do, plan on not being able to thoroughly fish every run as much as liked as there is just too much good water and not enough time.
Walk and wade trips are not for everyone as they sometimes require more physical activity than do the floats. However, they are a great way to explore the upper reaches of the river and to find yourself sight casting in very small runs to native steelhead ranging from 6-15 pounds. These fish, that arrive here via the Frasier River, are chrome bright and move willingly for flies. Walk and wade trips also afford you the opportunity to explore the wildlife in the area. Black bear, eagles and deer are all common sights in the area.

Although the lodge is fairly new, we are certain that those who visit, will want to return year after year, as there are very few places in BC like this.
As we speak, the owners of Pitt River Lodge are under construction on a new lodge that will accommodate 8 anglers in an even more remote and comfortable setting to fish the upper Pitt and some of its tributaries. The new lodge is Blue Creek Lodge. More updates coming soon!
