South Coast Steelhead, Oregon
For steelhead anglers, the southern Oregon coast has about as much legendary water as anywhere in the world with the Cascade Mountains hosting the origination of the Umpqua and Rogue Rivers.
While these two water sheds continue to thrill steelhead anglers from around the world, there are a host of other fabulous coastal steelhead streams littered around the region that only those who fish locally or have dedicated their lives to steelhead have ever heard of.
Names such as Chetco, Coquille, Illinois, Elk and Sixes are not on the tip of the tongue of most worldly steelhead anglers and yet maybe they should be. These smaller coastal waters afford anglers the opportunity to fish for as chrome bright of a steelhead as anywhere.
Size will of course range from the smaller summer run fish in the 7lb. range to some huge winter fish nearing 20lbs.
For those in the Ashland, Medford and Roseburg areas, these rivers are a stones throw from you and are worth the time to go visit, you might be surprised at what you find.
