Kootenai River, Montana

If no crowds and fishing dry flies to rising rainbows averaging 12"-16" is what you have in mind the Kootenai is the river for you. The Kootenai is a big, broad tailwater fishery located below Libby Dam in Libby, Montana. It's most efficiently fished by drift boat in the traditional float/wade style and wading is very user friendly since most of the river bottom is gravel.

Four, five, and six weights rods with floating lines will do the trick and we generally don't get much wind up here since we're west of the divide. Kootenai rainbows are wild and some of the hardest fighting trout in the state. Consistent fishing usually begins around the middle of June and lasts into November.

Clark Fork River, MT

Brown trout fishery, with occasional Rainbows and Cutthroats. The lower Clark is best characterized as "big water". Usually flat and slow, it carries pods of large Rainbows that rise at the drop of a fly. You can expect to see generous numbers of Westslope Cutthroat as well. I've seen many Rainbows better than 18 inches taken from the lower Clark. This is probably one of the best rivers for taking a large fish on small dry flies.

Big Spring Creek, Montana

Located in the central part of the state Big Spring Creek runs through Lewistown, Montana, and is the largest spring creek in the state. It's very easy to wade, best fished with a four or five weight, and not more that twenty-five feet in width. It's also full of wild rainbows and brown trout averaging 12"-20" and the insect hatches are outstanding. We currently have three miles of private access on Big Spring Creek assuring privacy and prime opportunities.

Good fishing starts as early as March and is usually spectacular during May and June. So our Big Spring Creek operation is always a wonderful option during the early season while most of the waters around the state are high and unfishable during early spring.
