Xcalak, Mexico

Just
north of the Belize border, on the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula lies
the coastal village of Xcalak which lies within the Xcalak National Reef Park. The park protects the Meso Amercian Reef which lies al along the Costa Maya coast. On the south side of the marine park lies the mangrove area with the river Boca Bacalar chico. Many people visit that area to see the beautiful flora and fauna.
The village of Xcalak is small and tranquil. There are about 500 residents. Life in Xcalak is relaxed, most people live from fishing. or the tourism business that is slowly growing. Infrastructure development is slowly bringing Xcalak to the 21st century standard of living. However due to environmental laws the area is protected against large scale tourism. Developments like the local clinic and library increase the standard of living for the native population.
Anglers
on this trip target bonefish and permit that roma the skinny water
of the flats and lagoons. These days, anglers look for low pressure
bonefish flats in search of "dumb" bones that haven't
seen many flies. This is your place. Although the bones aren't huge,
they do average 2-4 pounds with a few larger and with very little
pressure. Permit are also present in the same flats in good numbers.
Again, these fish are not large but are less spooky and more landable
than their larger relatives in other destinations. The permit average
around 5 pounds with shots are fish nearing and exceeding 10 pounds.
Last but definitely not least, the baby tarpon also peruse the lagoons
feeding on the rich aquatic life in their waters. For most anglers,
baby tarpon are the ticket as they still display all the arials
of larger ones but don't require hours of arm breaking play on huge
rods, although tarpon to 100 pounds are looking for your fly as
well. Truly a wonderful place to experience the thrill of all three
species.
While
not fishing, you will stay at one of two comfortable yet intimate resorts.
Even though small, it is a full service resort that was built in the past 10 years or so. The rooms are quite spacious and can accommodate a variety of bed configurations. Both are located on the old beach road just north of the village of Xcalak.
Each room has a private bath, ceiling fans , a balcony with breathtaking views of the ocean, 24 hour electricity, daily maid service, and purified water. Air-conditioning in selected rooms is an option, although rarely needed, since mother nature almost always provides a moderate ocean breeze to keep things cool and comfortable. Three of the rooms are equipped with a refrigerator.
Both resorts also have a full service restaurant and bar on site. The freshest of sea foods are served daily as well as a variety of meats, fruits and vegetables all served with cleanliness and freshness first and foremost.
