McKenzie River, Oregon
The McKenzie River runs through the heart of the Willamette Valley
near Eugene, home to the University of Oregon and alive with fine restaurants, art galleries and performance venues in a healthy
small town atmosphere. From the snow-capped peaks of the Cascades,
the crystal clear waters of the McKenzie rush toward the valley
floor in forty plus miles of scenic and fishable water. Here are
the ancestral home waters of the double-end McKenzie drift boat,
a craft designed for maneuverability now fished widely throughout
the west and world.
The McKenzie makes for an exciting day of whitewater and rising
rainbow trout as the river rushes the drifter between forested hillsides
covering one of the numerous four to six mile drifts. Fish range
from twelve to sixteen inches and readily attack dries cast their
way. A two to five weight rod with a dry line will perform admirably
and provide an exciting day of sport on the local rainbows. From
a home base of Eugene, many other rivers and high lakes offer both
trout and steelhead angling for multiple day excursions on a diverse
selection of waters.
Fishing seasons are year round on the McKenzie with winter months
dictated by weather trends. A couple of weeks of dry and mild temperatures
can put a fine rise on the river even in mid-winter. Fishing begins
in earnest around May and continues consistently good through the
beautiful months of September and October. The McKenzie provides
a don't miss fishing opportunity with multitudes of other activities
(sightseeing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking or cultural pursuits)
available.
