Kettle River, Washington
The Kettle River runs south, flowing out of British Columbia and is a little-known fishery in this state. The stretch of the Kettle that we fish can, at times, rank right up there with the well-known blue-ribbon waters of the Yakima.
Prime fishing begins on the Kettle when spring run-off subsides in late June. The Kettle is generally clear and shallow unless there is a rain-producing thunder storm that has recently passed through.
The majority of this river requires the use of long, light, leaders and stealthy casts of perfection to rising trout. Most fish in the Kettle will range between 12-16 inches with the occasional fish over 20 inches. The majority of the fish are rainbows and will take dry flies well into late summer. Later in the fall, the brown trout will start to be more active due to the upcoming spawning season. Brown trout will readily take large dry flies as well as streamers. These fish can measure up to 20 inches and will concentrate around the mouths of small tributaries.
The primary hatches are caddis, PMD's, baetis, black ants, and golden stoneflies. When the fishing on the Kettle is at its peak, one can expect to have many hits in a good day’s fishing. While it doesn't happen often, we have seen days on this river produce 15-20 fish within an hour’s time! The Kettle is a year-round fishery with the winter producing good numbers of whitefish as well as nymphing for trout.
