Clonanav Fishing Centre , Ireland

Clonanav Flyfishing Centre and Guesthouse are situated on a working farm in the Nire Valley. The three star Guesthouse has 10 bedrooms with private facilities, all of which have direct dial telephones. Breakfast is served in our large dining room.

During the fishing season Clonanav hosts a number of structured fly fishing schools which cater to both begining and experienced fly anglers.  The courses are designed to make learing the art of fly fishing fun and easy.  The schools have been featured on many TV programmes both in Ireland and the UK.

The lodge manager, head guide and instructor, Andrew Ryan, is an FFF Master and APGAI qualified instructor, which is the highest casting instruction qualification in the world.   Andrew has been instructing at Clonanav since 1992 and is widely recognized as an expert on dry fly fishing in Ireland and has also instructed in Spain, Argentina and the USA.

The River Suir is Europe's finest dry fly river for wild brown trout and is very similar to the English Chalkstreams. It is the second longest river in Ireland being 114 miles in length. It is a wide river ranging from 25 - 35 metres in its middle sections. To fish this river body waders are essential. The river has a fine gravel bed, which gives a solid base underfoot. The trout average 0.5 to .75 pounds (27 - 35 cm) . There are plenty of larger fish which are mainly caught in the evening.

A spate (mountain) river running from peat bogland in the Comeragh Mountains, This gin clear stream has exceptional stocks of trout averaging 0.25 lbs to 0.75 lbs (25 - 35 cm). There is a good stock of bigger fish, but these are seldom caught. The record for this river was a 6lb 4 oz (65cm) trout, caught by a guest at Clonanav. This river bed is mainly slippery stones and rocks, so felt soles are recommended here.

The Tar is a wide shallow river with different features than the others. 18 - 25 metres wide with a healthy growth of ranunculus weed, which is a haven for insect life. There is a huge stock of fish in this river, making the average size of the fish smaller than in the other rivers. The average sinse being 23 - 28 cm 0.3 - 0.5 lb. There are still plenty of larger fish on this river up to 45 cm being regurlary captured. Very often compared to the Rivers Itchen & Test in southern England.

The fly hatches are prolific with many different types of insects including, caddis, ephemera, plecoptera, baetis, ephemeroptera and simulium.
