Mango Creek Lodge , Honduras

Mango Creek lodge is located in the beautiful bay of Port Royal on the south eastern side of the island of Roatan, far from the noise and crowds of the west end.
Set amongst a national Nature Reserve area, there are no roads to Mango Creek. Everyone is transported here by boat from the nearby town of Oak Ridge. It is only a short boat ride, of about 15 minutes (3.5 miles) so what we offer is an unspoiled place, quiet, peaceful and eco friendly but certainly not remote. We generate our own solar and wind power and usually only run our generator for a short period in the evening.
We have numerous small islets in the area, plus the mangrove canals, and the reefs and flats on both the north side and south side of Roatan. When out on the fishing boats, apart from seeing the usual marine life, you will have the opportunity to see iguanas, parrots and maybe even a cayman crocodile in the mangroves! If you enjoy nature you'll find a lot of shy iguanas, hummingbirds and rabbit-like agoutis right here on the property, and there is always "Patience" our crazy, talking, yellow-headed amazon parrot. Queen Conch is now a protected species, having been over-harvested to the point of endangerment. We are proud of our conch nursery is the grass shallows around the restaurant - our guides pick them up and bring them in where they are not at risk, and can grow up safely.
The flats on Mango Creek's "doorstep" are home to the ever elusive bonefish, sometimes in schools of 30 or more - of all sizes. Wading and stalking these flats is an unforgettable challenge - then there's that adrenaline kick when the bonefish takes the fly and you have a Hook Up !! Landed or not - it's pure exhilaration !! As the tide changes, sun gets warmer you move more Easterly to other flats, some you can fish from the boat, others are shallow enough for wading, your experienced, English speaking guide will spot the quarry for you and put you right on the spot.
As your guide takes you farther East towards Helene and Barbareta, you'll discover schools of Permit of all sizes awaiting your skill with the fly rod - there are also schools of snapper, the occasional black tipped shark, then, when the sun's high, it's time to head for the mangroves to track down the majestic Tarpon lurking in the shade.
Permit are known to be elusive and beautiful and the excitement of stalking a tailing permit is second to none. The permit are found on the same flats as the bonefish, but can also be found cruising deeper water on the edges of certain flats. Permit fishing is year round with the best numbers of fish found February - June, when we see groups of between 30 and 50. The average permit weighs 8 - 12 lbs, but can reach 30 lbs.
Our restaurant will seat up to 24 people and is constructed over the water, fully screened and open all around to the cooling tropical breezes. To see photos, and for more information, click on the buttons at the left of this page.
We have two types of accommodations - Cabanas over the water and the Main
Lodge up the hill.
The Cabanas are a delight to visit. Set on pilings over the water, they each have their own private bathroom which contains a shower, toilet and sink. Although they look quite funky from the outside are actually extremely well constructed and finished inside with beautiful Honduran hardwood floors, mahogany or cedar shutters, hand carved doors. The cabanas have wooden roofs with shingles, covered in thatch for decoration. The thatch also acts as great insulation during the summer months.
They each have a queen bed and a single bed, screened windows and doors, ceiling fans and a private deck with hammock and swing chair. You can literally step from your deck to your boat! Hot water is available in the evenings when the generator is on. They are wired with 110v electricity. They are well constructed by master craftsmen and have beautiful hardwood floors.
Our Main Lodge is really difficult to get a picture of! It is set in the midst of huge trees covered by a Jungle canopy. From the water it is invisible; lost and private, in the tropical forest.
After climbing the steps to the Main Lodge you are greeted by a truly impressive structure. Inside there are high vaulted ceilings, marble floors, hand carved mahogany doors and furniture.
There is overnight accommodation in three rooms. Two of the rooms each have one Queen sized bed and one Single bed. These are off the main lodge, good sized and very beautiful - queen beds, hand carved woods, nice bathrooms, hot water in the evenings, their own decks in the trees, looking West.
The quality and ambience of our Main Lodge is superb with the high vaulted ceilings, marble floors, hand carved mahogany doors and furniture - all made right here on the premises. Everything to make you comfortable.
