Green River, Washington

While pretty much an urban river, the Green offers locals and visitors alike a beautiful respite from the city life without the commute of many other Puget Sound rivers.
Because the Green is so close to Seattle and Tacoma, those who know where to access the river and how to fish are in pretty good numbers. However, there are some lesser known spots that offer good opportunities for both steelhead in the winter and summer as well as resident trout. Much like its sister streams of the area, the trout on this side of the mountains are not huge, but with a lighter weight rod (0-3 weight), these fiesty and willing fish provide plenty of fun for any angler.
The Green is hit pretty hard by gear anglers but for those willing to hike a bit, the Green River Gorge and the upper stretches of the river offer some solitude from the masses.
For steelhead anglers, this will be a slightly different type of fishery than what many locals are used to on the Skykomish or Skagit Rivers. Small, intimate runs offer classic looking steelhead runs in miniature form requiring a different skill set to fish the water effectively. Winter can make wading access a bit more difficult with higher water levels reaching further in the banks of trees and willows.
For locals looking for a new river to learn this year or visitors to Seattle on business, the Green makes a wonderfully beautiful and enjoyable half or full day fishing trip.
