Grande
Ronde River, Oregon
Grande Ronde Photo Journal

The Grande Ronde is a small jewel of a river sequestered away in
a remote corner of northeastern Oregon. Here you can taste the rare
privilege of having summer steelhead rip a dry fly from the surface
film in an eruption that leaves a hole the size of your kitchen
sink. Going back to swinging wet flies can be especially difficult
after this unique encounter.
A four or five
day float trip from Minam to Troy under the practiced and capable
hand of Marty Sheppard, owner of Little Creek Outfitters puts you in touch with
stark canyon walls, native wildlife, whitewater runs and the joyous
experience of exposure to this river's special breed of steelhead.
Inaccessible by road the canyon area of the Grande Ronde is left
to your leisurely paced exploration of the river, its surroundings
and its fish. In addition to the steelhead, rainbow trout and small
mouth bass inhabit the river opening up other options for the day's
adventure.
Occasionally
treating oneself to the joys of multiple day drift boat fishing
is a necessity for one's own mental health. Make a monumental difference
in your outlook on life.
While the river does run into Washington as well, where nearly every single person for 1500 miles can easily get to the water, why do it if you don't have to. Take a breather from the rat race, both on and off the river and get away from everyone but those thoughtful enough to make the same decision as you. You will be so happy you did.
