Tavewa Island, Fiji

Fly Fish Fiji has been operating from the island of Tavewa in the Yasawas for 5 years.

Henry Murray is a local Fijian who has been guiding sea kayaking and fly fishing trips for many years throughout the islands in Fiji.  His passion is fly fishing and he has phenomenal knowledge of local fishing and takes a keen interest in Fijian flora and fauna. As well as providing you a fishing experience you will not forget Henry provides an insight into Fijian customs and history that will enhance your experience of this beautiful country.

You will be provided  a guide, boat, and gear although you are always encouraged to test out your own equipment if you are keen. If you wish you can be provided saltwater fly fishing instruction if this is a new skill for you or if you are looking to improve your success with our challenging fish species here in the islands.

Your full day of fishing is a minimum of 6 hours depending on tides and weather.

You will be fishing on sand flats for Trevally, (Giant, Blue Fin, Black Fin and Amber Fin).    The Trevallys  are the fish of choice, as they put up an incredible fight and can be in excess of 50 lbs.     Barracuda , Mackerel, Queen Fish, Coral Trout, and Coral Bass are a few more challenging salt water catches!

We also chase large schools of fish in the Deep Blue which might get you  a  Skip Jack, Wahoo, Dogtooth or Yellow Fin Tuna!

Island Voyager live-aboard vessel

The Island Voyager is located in Fiji, which is in the middle of the South Pacific and surrounded by a number of island countries, most with enormous relatively un-explored fishing potential. The vessel has a 2,000-mile range and is capable of traveling to any destination in the Pacific Ocean. As we all know the world is shrinking rapidly and there are very few islands remaining that are unexplored and never before fished. Given sufficient interest, the Island Voyager will target some of these with the idea of visiting pristine South Seas venues and fishing in lagoons 5where fish have never before seen a fly.

Although permission is required to venture into these waters, we already have secured it for the Cook Islands, located approximately 1,500 miles below the equator. Other areas within ready range of the vessel include Vanuatu formerly known as New Hebrides, the Gilbert Island chain, Kiribati, Tahiti, Tonga and many, many more.

The Fishing - The immense area of fishable waters with very little pressure separate Fiji from the more famous fishing venues. The rich reef ecosystem and nearby blue water is home to over forty species of game fish - something for every angler. Fiji is just now being discovered for its outstanding trevally fishing. Giant trevally, blue trevally and other trevally species patrol the surf, the edges of flats and reefs, and along the offshore reefs. Casting and trolling poppers will elicit strikes from large barracuda, snappers, and coral trout too. When the tide is moving, rising or falling, anglers can expect consistent action, and drawing an explosive strike on just about every cast is not uncommon. Fly anglers can also spend their days drifting (in the runabout) some of the world's most beautiful reef flats and sight-fishing for trevally.

Blind casting the reefs is also very effective. If you're looking for bigger offshore game, you may get shots at mahi mahi (dorado), wahoo or tuna. Where the reef ends, the blue water begins. Current lines outside of the reefs provide excellent offshore angling for yellow fin tuna, skipjack, wahoo, marlin, mackerel (Walu), and mahi mahi (dorado) as well as occasional trevally and monster barracuda. Fly fishing at night can also be very effective for barracuda, trevally, and other nocturnal species.
