Chalk Streams , southern England
with Famous Fishing

We are called Famous Fishing for a reason. The only waters we deal in are the finest trout fly fishing streams in the world, rivers most people never even get to see, let alone fish – the spring fed chalkstreams that are fly fishing's historic home. Because we specialise in chalk stream fishing, we have been able to access the best privately owned water, including stretches of the Test, Itchen, Kennet, Avon and most of their tributaries.
The chalk streams of southern England are well known as the cradle of modern fly fishing. The reason why these rivers have always enthralled the fly fisher is not so well understood – it is due to the nerve-tingling excitement of casting at large, wary trout in crystal clear water! That is how the artificial dry fly and nymph came to be developed here in the 19th Century, and although modern technology has improved our equipment, the methods and tactics we use today are essentially the same. Feeding trout are individually stalked with an imitative fly cast delicately and accurately upstream. You will rarely catch a chalk stream trout by accident – each one presents a unique sporting challenge.
No matter what your age or experience, Famous Fishing's qualified fly fishing guides, instructors and coaches will save you hours of frustration and uncertainty. From the start, our focus is on clear explanation. Our fly fishing instruction covers a range of subjects: fly fishing equipment, fly-casting, fish behaviour and diet, safety and river craft - providing you with a solid foundation of the right skills for future flyfishing success. Individual or group courses of one, two and three days are available with Sage and Hardy equipment provided. We teach fly fishing for Trout and Grayling on all the chalkstream rivers and streams including the Rivers Test, Anton, Avon, Wylye, Itchen and Lambourn. Our private lakes near Andover in Hampshire and Salisbury in Wiltshire are the ideal locations for an introduction into the art of flyfishing.
We also teach advanced casts and other presentation techniques needed to outwit the most educated brown trout. You can learn more about trout behaviour in a single day on a chalk stream than you might in a year on another river. Nowhere else do you get the opportunity to stalk brown trout of such size and quality in such shallow, clear water. If you are interested in entomology and fly tying, we can catch the natural nymphs and insects from the river, identify them, explain their life cycles and importance, and even tie the appropriate imitation right there on the river bank.

Single days are available for individuals and groups of up to twenty people. We have fishing suitable for all levels of experience and can provide the best equipment, qualified guides, delicious lunches and a full range of accommodation. Or you can just buy a river beat and fish unguided if you prefer. Whatever your exact requirements, we always take the greatest care to ensure you have an enjoyable day.
At Famous Fishing we like to look after you. Whether you have lunch beside the river, in a fishing lodge or in a manor house, you can be sure the food will be freshly prepared from the finest ingredients, and accompanied by the very best wines.
In all the establishments we recommend you can expect a warm welcome, superb food and comfortable beds. Traditional inns, country house hotels or private houses are available conveniently located for your fishing.
