Jardines de la Reina, Cuba
Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit

About
50 miles off the southern coast of Cuba, there are the Jardines de
la Reina, an archipelago formed by hundreds of keys of various dimensions,
rich in mangroves, palms and tropical plants that stretch out on white
sand beaches. There are 75 miles of "cayos" (islands) of
various dimensions, of coral and sand flats, criss-crossed with deep
channels through which the fish can reach shallow water to hunt for
food. There are also mangrove swamps, gin-clear water, white sand,
and turquoise shallows. These pristine waters are home to vast schools
of bonefish, tarpon, permit, barracuda, jack crevalle, cubera and
snapper.
This
is one of the least explored angling destinations in the world.
Your accommodations are uniquely located in areas where there is
no commercial for professional fishing except for you guides. One
can expect to cast to schools of bones ranging from 3-6 pounds,
all day long and landing between 20-40 is very common. When you tire
of the bonefishing, the mid sized tarpon, ranging from 20-40 pounds
and the robust permit ranging from 15-30 pounds can be a nice retreat!
The fishing will vary from walking flats and beaches along many
of the keys to casting from a flats boat against the many mangroves
and lagoons in the region. If your schedule permits, you are also
able to take a tour of the mainland to visit the influence of Ernest
Hemingway or take a tour of a Cuban cigar factory.

Las Salinas and Rio Hatiguanico--Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Snook
Las Salinas, located in the Zapata National park, has been closed for decades as a government military protected area. The area has just been opened, and we are extremely lucky to have reliable contacts with which to book Las Salinas as a pristine and unfished area. The rule at Las Salinas is fly fishing only! The boats are flat-bottomed non – motorized with a maximum capacity of 1 guide and 1 fisherman.
Las Salinas is a unique national park and it is recently open for fly fishing only. It is a saltwater eco-system of many lagoons connected by very small channels. Tides variation is extremely low making for fantastic sight casting for most of the day. It is impossible and forbidden to use motorized boats at Las Salinas. All the lagoons have an average of one foot depth. Las Salinas is protected by the government and allows no more than 6 fly anglers per week.
The rule at Salinas is single fly fishing only and it is impossible to fish Las Salinas on your own or without a license.
Accommodations are at the Hotel Don Pedro. Don Pedro is located about 75 minutes from the site of Las Salinas and 45 minutes from Rio Hatiguanico. Rancho Don Pedro is built in a rustic style with individual wooden cabins including a terrace, bathroom h/c water, twin beds and it has a good Cuban restaurant.
Another option is fly fishing on Rio Hatiguanico for Tarpon (between 10 - 50 pounds) Snook ( between 5 - 10 pounds), Snapper, Barracuda and Jack Crevalle. The biggest Tarpon caught in 2003 weighted 60 pounds! Your guide will take you out on the Rio Hatiguanico, which has been described as Amazon of Cuba. The guides boats used on Rio Hatiguanico have outboard engines with a maximum capacity of 1 guide and 1 fisherman.
Rancho Don Pedro consists of several cabañas, used for accommodation, reception and a restaurant. At Don Pedro you will be in a ranch atmosphere with horses, cows and chickens on the premises. Cuisine at Don Pedro is excellent. Every day there is a choice of four different main courses such as chicken, pork, beef and various seafood. Breakfast is served every morning with a ham/omelet, fruit, eggs, juice, milk, coffee, cheese and bread.

Isla Juventud-- Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit
Avalon Fishing Center, the founders of the fishing at Jardines de la Reina, has explored a new fishing paradise in Cuba: Isla Juventud.
The fishing area of Isla Juventud is really huge and covered with large white flats and some of them are mixed with coral and turtle grass. You are inside a marine park, and all the surrounding cays and lagoons offer very good fishing. The area is well protected and some exploratory trips have already been made. These are the first results…………
This is some of the best bonefishing we have ever seen. The average fish is large, more than 5lbs with a possible catch of double-digit fish every day. This is perhaps the last place in the world where you can experience a " never seen fisherman" bonefish population. The trophy size of Bonefish and the different types of fishing, wading and poling, will make this incredibly interesting fishing even for the most experienced fly fishermen.
Tarpon are caught from 15lbs to over 60lbs, in channels, on the flats, the open sea and around the mangroves. Some other more areas are spotted suitable for Tarpon fishing.
Many permit have been seen with an average of 10lbs but also many larger fish of more than 20 lbs.
Hotel Rancho el Tresoro is used for accommodation. This is a comfortable 3 star hotel. All rooms have hot water and A/C. A normal week includes six full days of fishing, starting on a Sunday. Guests may arrive Saturday morning, Saturday evening or very early Sunday morning. Flight from Havana is 25 minutes, and transfer from the airport to the hotel is only 10 minutes.
