Patagonian Base-Camp Lodge, Chile

Chile's 11th region, the province of Aysén, is the country's most unexplored forested area. The Patagonian BaseCamp Lodge is located in the midst of these unexplored evergreen forests, on the banks of the Río Palena. The large freestone beach just in front of the lodge offers perfect wading possibilities and the home pool has brought some fantastic trout to the surface.
Countless rivers, creeks and brooks bring the rain- and melting water from the Andes. In almost all of these waters wild trout live and reproduce in abundance. Even salmon are finding their way upstream to their spawning beds. The population of trout consists of wild brown- and rainbow trout, but also brook trout. You will fish in breathtaking scenery ranging from wide-open pampas to impenetrable native forests; from magnificent snow-capped mountains, to beautiful fjords. Our guides will show you the best and most diverse fly fishing Chile has to offer. The chance that you will meet another fishermen on your outing is unlikely.
But fly fishing in Chile is more than a hunt for trophy fish. It is a unique cultural and natural experience in a still undiscovered and pristine environment. The Patagonian BaseCamp Lodge, on the banks of the Río Palena offers a very comfortable and home-like base from which to explore the natural beauties of Patagonia. Many of our guests have called our place Chile's best located and most stylish, yet comfortable lodge.
The most important species of trout we are after are wild brown and rainbow trout. The rivers surrounding The BaseCamp hold a very healthy population of both species. Trout are not stocked here and found their own natural balance in numbers and sizes. You will catch lots of wild and strong fish within the 12 to 20 inch range. Fish over 20 inches are caught almost daily, over 24 inches weekly. The lodge record for a brown trout is 32 inches and for a rainbow trout 28 inches. By March searun brown trout start running up the rivers and can give you some great surprises.
Knowing and fishing the local waters for almost ten years now, we have developed a fleet of very modern and partly tailor-made boats. Some are imported, others locally manufactured. Our aluminium jet boats are driven by the latest generation of 4-stroke Yamaha engines and double as drift boats on some rivers. A comfortable seat and casting platform make these crafts excellent tools. Next to our motorized fleet, we use a number of rafts and catarafts. All rafts are equipped with especially designed fishing frames and you will be amazed how comfortable it is to fish from these units and how easy they handle in white water. To fish around the weed beds and reed fields of some smaller lagoons, we keep locally made wooden rowboats, thus minimizing the disturbance of the environment and the fish.
The lodge offers very comfortable accommodation to a maximum of 12 guests or 8 fishermen at the time. All of the six double rooms, with en-suite facilities, offer a great view over the Río Palena. If you prefer, subject to availability, you may have your own private room at no extra cost In the lounge, the big fireplace is the heart of the lodge. Sink away in one of the comfortable chairs, stretch out your legs and enjoy typical Chilean cocktails and snacks while sharing your stories, adventures and lies with your fellow travellers. After feeling reborn with a soak in the wood heated hot tub, a great Chilean wine will be opened and Carolina will surprise you with one of her great dinners. She is a master in combining typical local dishes with international cuisine.
The Southern most part of Latin America is dominated by the vast wilderness of Patagonia. An area that is sparsely inhabited or developed. The beautiful Andes Mountains form the spine of Patagonia. Squeezed between these mountains and the Pacific Ocean lies the thin country of Chile, the homeland of, amongst others, the Mapuche Indians. Because of this, it offers almost unlimited possibilities for many kinds of outdoor activities: fishing, rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking or bird watching. All easily accessible and commonly guided for the non-angler.
