Canyon Creek , Washington

One of the largest tributaries in the Nooksack watershed, Canyon Creek is also one of the most productive spawning grounds for endangered North Fork early chinook. In addition, pink, coho, chum, sockeye, steelhead, and sea-run and resident cutthroat trout also use the creek. The lower 4.5 miles of Canyon Creek a major tributary to the North Fork Nooksack, are important spawning habitat for North Fork early chinook, which are listed as threatened with extinction under the federal Endangered Species Act. (At river mile 4.5, there is a natural waterfall that prevents further migration upstream.) The creek is also considered a priority area for a second threatened species, bull trout. This entire lower reach of Canyon Creek is off limits to fishing.
Upper Canyon Creek, due to a natural barrier, provides a healthy fishery for resident rainbow and brook trout as well as dolly varden. There are miles and miles of creek to cover and you can hike in to get away from the road. Canyon Creek first becomes fishable in July and gets better in the month of August. September can provide some great hatches until the cold starts to set in near the end of the month.
Pocket water fishing mixed with pool drop configurations make up much of the fishable water. Intermixed you will find slower riffles and glides that invite the drift of a size 16 elk hair caddis or parachute adams. In fact, open up your dry box and take a pick because the fish are very opportunistic here.
Smaller rods in the 0-3 wt. range are perfect. Most of the fish run from 6 inches to 10 inches with the occasional 12-14 inch lunker for the stealthy fishermen. Small stream pocket water requires a shorter leader and shorter casts. Get into the groove and find yourself lost in laughs as fish fight for your fly. We can’t wait to take you there.
