Sugar Creek Ranch, California

Sugar
Creek Ranch is located in the beautiful northern California mountians
just south of the Oregon border. This ranch of over 150 acres has
been producing incredibly large, trophy rainbow trout, that are naturally
reproducing in all of their 7 small lakes.
Each
of the small lakes have thriving populations of brown dace minnows,
suckers, sculpin, crawdads and leeches. All of these are food forms
for the trout all year long. In addition, from April through early
June the little rainbows that hatched during the winter are a major
food source as well for these aggressive trout. Obviously, when
it comes to fishing for these fish during these months, imitations
of these food sources will certainly provide plenty of action throughout
the day. As the season moves into spring, the trout will feed more
regularly on the surface. Midge hatches will begin in February or
even earlier if it is a mild winter. As the season progresses, other
hatches will occur as well, including caddis, damsel BWO. Terrestrial
imitations take lots of fish during the summer months as well since
there are an abundance of ants, hoppers, crickets and beetles in
the grass along the banks.
All
in all, this is one of the best locations to go and target large
rainbow trout. The ranch also has a small lodge where 3 bedrooms
can accommodate up to 6 anglers and food service is also available.
One of the nice options of this destination, is that you can choose
either to be guided by one of the owners of the ranch or their guides,
or you can get some last minute tips and head to the lakes to fend
for yourself.
