Thaimacu Lodge, Sao Benedito River, Brazil

The Brazilian Amazon is a vast ecological structure which gives refuge to many species of animals, birds, reptiles and of course fish. The Amazon basin is known for its incredible peacock bass fishing, and you can add to that at least a dozen other species which you may catch such as Pacu, Matrinxa, Piranha, Catfish and Payara to name a few. Your trip is based out of lodge on the Sao Benedito River, a drainage of the Amazon River. It is located in the state of Para, south of the equator in Brazil. This lodge located in the heart of the rainforest has gained a reputation as being one of the top lodges in Brazil due to its catch and release philosophy.

Some of the species of fish you will catch like the Peacock Bass and the Piranha are well known to many anglers but many others are not. The peacock bass is not actually a member of the bass family but rather the Chchlid family. Matrincha, a giant silvery shad like fish, is heavily sought after by anglers due to their aggressive surface strikes and can grow up to 12 pounds. Pacu is a blue-gill type fish that can reach sizes close to 20 pounds known to jump 3-5 feet in the air when hooked. Payara is among the most unusual fish you will catch in this area. It has long fangs on the bottom mouth that fit into slots in the upper mouth and the tips stick out the top of the head. Traira has a cylindrical body and round fins with colors varying from gray to brown. Traira are more successfully caught in the low light hours of dusk and even later. These are just a few of the species you will encounter on this trip. Others include Bicuda, Pirarara, Jau, and Piraiba.

You will arrange your travel to Cuiaba, Brazil where you will spend the night and catch your flight to Alta Floresta the next morning. Upon arrival you will be met by either Carlos or Eunice Munhoz, the owners of the lodge. From there you will be transferred to the lodge via air taxi offering a bird's eye view of the Amazon rainforest and other rivers.

Upon arrival at the Pousada Thaimacu Lodge, you will be greeted by the lodge manager and your guide who will help you get situated into your room. Located on the Sao Benedito River, the lodge offers all the comforts necessary for a fantastic stay. Double rooms with private bathrooms air conditioner, mini-fridge and laundry service are just a few of the features of the lodge.

Each day, three complete meals are provided by the lodge as well as beverages including sodas, beer and plenty of mineral water. You will soon look forward to dessert each night as exotic dishes such as passion fruit mousse or guava pudding are served.

The Sao Benedito River is a black water river with a variety of water types. It is fished only by the clients of the lodge, and only catch and release is practiced. The guides use 18 ft. jon boats that have 25 hp engines that transport you up the river quickly and easily. Two anglers per boat gives you ample room to cast to a variety of species of fish each day. The guides are locals with incredible knowledge about eh local fish, fish habits, and techniques. You will be fishing primarily from the boat so bringing tackle bags and extra gear is not a problem.

The Sao Benedito is only part of your fishing adventure. Your guide will also take you for an overnight adventure to one of three out-camps on the river Cururu. This river was fished only by the local indigenous tribe until about a year ago. At this point, they allowed Thaimacu Lodge to come and fish, catch and release only of course. You will spend the night at the out-camp, which is a bit more rustic than the lodge. The out-camp provides wall tents, all with private bathrooms and hot showers. The food at the out-camps is similar to the lodge so no sacrifices are made there!

At the end of your trip, you will be transported back to Alta Floresta by air taxi where you will again spend one night, then catch your flight from Cuiaba back home.
