Bogachiel
River, Washington

Stepping
onto Washington's Olympic Peninsula lands you smack dab in the middle
of winter steelheading's hallowed ground. Inch for inch this area
provides both opportunity and sustenance to the steelhead fanatic.
Winter steelhead fly-fishers seem to be imbued with a strange quirk
not generally seen in genes of the normal fly flinger. The ability
to survive and even revel
in abusive weather conditions, cold water, lethargic fish tendencies,
shortened days and bleak conditions that scream, "stay home"
are all part of the magic and legend surrounding winter steelhead on
the fly.
In reality the quiet solitude, peaceful unhurried pace
and dramatic possibilities make this a "must do" experience
for serious fly anglers. As in most cases the rewards are commensurate
with the challenges overcome.
Rivers
on the peninsula are smaller, each with a unique personality. The Bogachiel or "Bogy" as it is referred to by locals and regionals is a river with many faces.
The upper section has a little quicker descent and therefore has a smattering of both short and longer lenghth typical runs for swinging flies. As you make your way towards the confluence with the Sol Duc, it begins to flatten and collect the large timbers from recent high water flows. Runs can be very long at times but don't over-look the small pieces of water which lay in between.
Normal sized spey rods work great here as most of the time, your run of choice has you standing with plenty of back cast or D-Loop room to launch however long a cast you need.
Summer
also brings steelhead to the Hoh as well as sea-run cutthroat, Dolly
Varden and resident rainbow in the upper river.
