Charlie Robinton

Professional Fly Fishing Guide

People have likened fly fishing to an addiction or religious pursuit, but for me it is simply an activity that makes me feel alive. When someone asks how I arrived at this particular lifestyle, I can connect the dots easily; my childhood memories reflect the glimmer from every pool in a trout stream.

As a kid I spent hours exploring tiny neighborhood creeks in my hometown of Palo Alto, California searching for any forms of life or natural objects that piqued my curiosity.  I can still see the horrified looks my mother would give when I would come home from one of these outings, tracking mud through the house and pulling some slimy creature out of my pocket to show her!

My jaunts into the wilderness past suburbia were my outlet to learn, explore and experience nature. As my ventures and mind became more complex I began to develop focused goals during my outings and came upon the sport of fly fishing. I had an immediate love for this activity because I was able to search for creatures, enjoy nature, and have a complex focus or goal to the outing. Growing up I went on countless fly fishing expeditions to the Sierra Nevadas, Northern California and beyond.  I found that wherever I traveled my link to that place was being connected to nature. To this day no matter how far away I am from where I was born, I can feel immediately at home by traveling to the nearest stream.

From the tiniest tributaries of California’s American River watershed to the churning flows of the Snake River in Idaho, the rivers, lakes and streams of the Western United States have been my inspiration. Fly fishing has given a direction to my life’s journey.  It is an outlet for my thought and creative expression, a catalyst in the formation of my conscious and physical self.

And like anything else in life we enjoy, I believe the fullest way to enjoy something is by sharing the experience with others. Whether it is the despair of watching a big rainbow rise to your size 20 blue wing olive, only to refuse it with a quick flip of the tail, or the exponential joy of catching your first steelhead, the experiences and memories are so meaningful when shared.

These days you can find me in the beautiful Northwest, walking the beaches of the Puget Sound, prowling the banks of the Yakima or staring with the wide-eyed wonder of a child at the marvelous beauty of a sunset on the Olympic Peninsula.  As a guide I offer a window into my life and the lives of millions of other anglers who find peace, enjoyment and fulfillment in the art of fly fishing.

My hope is that through the challenge of learning how to cast and present a fly to a fish, the beauty of putting all the pieces together, and the sheer joy of feeling connected to one of the worlds finest creations, others will find a deeper appreciation for angling, nature and life.

Dave,

The day  with Charlie in the mountain creeks was really great. Exactly what I was hoping for. My daughter went and it was very good for us to fish together. Charlie was a good choice for our trip. Best of luck with your business.
