Placencia,
Belize

Belize is located between Mexico and Guatemala on the eastern shore
of Central America. A country of 17,000 square miles of which are
an immense quantity of pristine flats, mangroves and lagoons. Probably
no more so than in the southern portion of the country which is
a mere 30-40 minute flight from Belize City, the nations capital.
Situated
at the end of a 20-mile peninsula is the little fishing village
of Placencia. This remote little town is the epitome of the Belizean
life-style. There are no paved streets and more boats than cars,
lending itself to the reason you will be there, spectacular fly-fishing.
Tobacco
Caye and Frank's Caye are other options when traveling to this area
for fantastic angling opportunities.
Tobacco
Caye is about a half hour boat ride out from Dangriga, which is
south of Placencia. The entire area is littered with small mangrove
islands and tidal grass flats that hold a huge variety of game fish.
The permit fishing is amazing if nothing short of incredible and
it is not uncommon to see many permit in the course of a day in
addition to the bonefishing opportunities.
Frank's
Caye is privately owned and is an hour south of Placencia by boat
in the Sapodilla chain of islands. The entire Sapodilla chain is
located on one of the most remote section of Belize's Barrier reef,
which translates into little pressure from anglers, a fly-fisherman's
dream come true.
Bonefish,
permit, tarpon, snook, jack and barracuda are inhabiting the waters
in this region nearly year-round. Permit to 40 pounds, tarpon to
120 pounds and bonefish ranging from 2-5 pounds are plentiful, other
anglers are not!
Accommodations
in Placencia range from very simple to nice with beach side huts
to smaller resort like hotels that are all locally owned and operated.
Meals in Placencia are not included in the price but all other meals
at Frank's Caye and Tobacco Caye are included. Lodging on Tobacco
and Frank's Cayes are intimate lodges owned and operated by locals
as well.
The
guides are all locals who have grown up fishing the surrounding
waters and all speak English. All have extensive experience with
fly-fishing and each is a vast wealth of knowledge of the area.
For
those looking for something different in a fly-fishing trip, this
should be your first stop. There are still very few anglers who
find themselves in this part of the world stalking these fish, and
we encourage you to be one of these few.
