Talaheim Lodge, Alaska

Beautiful and wild, Talaheim Country is abundant and varied for
the serious minded angler; action-packed for the adventurous floater;
picturesque and serene for the nature photographer...for young and
old alike, Talaheim offers adventure for all. Talaheim Lodge is
located midway up the Talachulitna River just 85 miles west of Anchorage
in the foothills of the Alaska Range.
Talaheim
lodge is the only lodge in Alaska offering full time helicopter
fly-outs to very remote, small, gin-clear streams; perfectly suited
for the fly fisherman wishing to cast a #5 weight rod with dry line
to three to seven pound trout and char.
By
mid-July our king salmon have entered out tributary streams to spawn
and that spawn draws our hungry resident predator fish. Just about
any fly tossed behind spawning salmon produces line stretching action.
Within a 15 minute flight radius of our lodge we can explore eight
different drainage's that rarely see anglers. Most of our days are
spent on the streams, not flying long distances.
Helicopter
flying through the wilderness is an adventure in itself. The panoramic
views are spectacular as is the rush of vertical flight. Often we
land on mountain ridges or glaciers for breath taking photos. For
a change of pace we offer glacier-side hikes or a lunch on a mountain
top.
Talaheim
offers a varied seven day experience. You may choose a five day
float trip or a seven day trip which includes daily fly-outs to
very isolated waters by helicopter and float plane. Gin clear rivers
and streams, most of which are 'wadeable'- just perfect for fly
fisherman -where salmon as well as large rainbow can easily be caught
with fly rods. We have great on-site fishing as well...fish 15 miles
of the Talachulitna from jet boats. We never have a weather day
where we cannot get to great fishing.
All
our floats run in late June and early July during the time of Alaska's
longest days and warmest weather. It is not uncommmon to have daytime
temperatures reaching 75-80 degrees F. The sun sets about 11:00
pm an rises about 4:30 am. We virtually have no darkness which leaves
lots of time for fishing. King salmon fishing normally slows down
during the heat of the day, but rainbow trout and grayling keep
active all the time. Float trips offer quiet transportation down
the river and great opportunities to see wildlife. Our floats are
only 12 hours in length, so given five days, we spend lots of the
time fishing. Most king salmon in Alaska are caught from boats "back
trolling". We hook all our kings right from the bank or wading...great
fishing with fly rods. For a small extra charge, we can pick up
our guests at camp by helicopter and give them a day on a smaller
stream for trout and salmon.
Test your fly fishing abilities against our mighty king salmon.
Most of these King salmon average 20 pounds and yet we catch several
better than 60 pounds each year. All our king salmon float trips
begin from our Talaheim Lodge, from this point we venture by rubber
raft down the lower "Tal".
Part of the charm and character of Talaheim is that is an authentic
rustic home separated from the nearest road by 60 miles of wilderness
lands. The guest cabins are constructed with local logs and timbers
from Talaheim's sawmill, they are rustic but comfortable and modern
with indoor bathrooms and electricity. In addition there is a sauna,
hot tub, radio, telephone, float plane, helicopters and river boats.
In 1988 we began utilizing a helicopter to take clients to areas
few fisherman have ever fished. At Talaheim we believe that Alaskan
fishing should be a wilderness experience, after all, you are fishing
the 'last frontier'. Just a 10 or 20 minute flight from the lodge
by helicopter will open up hundreds of miles of wilderness fishing
streams. Talaheim is one of the few lodges offering 'heli-fishing.'
Waters that we fish by helicopter see very few fisherman.
As Taleheim owner-operator, Mark is a registered guide and seasonal
bush pilot with more than 10,000 hours of Alaskan flying time, as
well as being an expert fly fisherman, qualifies Mark as Talaheim's
owner-operator. "Talaheim" as translated from German to
English means "home on the Tal". Talaheim has a homey
atmosphere and has served as a home to the Miller family for several
years.
Other fisherman might have to travel to Alaska three times to experience
what Talaheim offers in just one week. Talaheim is the wilderness
setting for small parties or families who want to enjoy the finest
in remote fishing away from crowds. The grandeur of this fish-filled
area, the truly Alaskan adventure, there personal service and the
comfortable wilderness lodging is our pride. What sets us apart
from most other Alaskan fishing lodges is our personal service,
the weekly schedule and the fact that Talaheim is owner-operated.
We have built, own and operate Talaheim.
At Talaheim, quality comes in small packages. Whether you are a
family or a group of guys, you will be looked after with just the
right amount of service to make your Alaska trip both comfortable
and relaxing. We limit our anglers to just six per week. By keeping
our number of guests down, we ensure you personal service and a
wilderness atmosphere. Come spend a week at Talaheim and find out
what others have been searching for for years!
