Moraine Creek, Alaska

Coming to Alaska to fly-fish is on nearly everyone's wish list, and for good reason. Most of the species of fish found in Alaska are larger than in most other locations and Moraine Creek is no exception. The Moraine is famous for good reason- the large trout that follow the sockeye salmon there for their eggs. This stream always produces the largest rainbows of the year. You will do a lot of sight fishing to very large shadows here as most rainbows range from 24-30 inches or 5-12 pounds, whichever gets you more excited.

Moraine Creek, American Creek and the Alagnak River are all located in the Katmai National Park and are all clear-water streams with no glacial silt. These rivers flow out of lakes, which serve as volume controls and filters providing consistency of the river for prime fishing the entire season. Due to the short length of Moraine Creek, this trip is usually combined with a trip on the Alagnak River to provide 6 days of excellent fishing.

The weather during this season is fairly mild with temperatures between 45-55 at night and 55-75 during the day. Rain is frequent and should be counted on when packing clothing for this trip. Bears will be feeding on the spawning salmon nearby offering many opportunities for photographs.

Toward the evening, you help set up camp and prepare dinner and unload boats. Camp includes over-sized tents with cots and a screened meal tent with tables and stools for your comfort. The cuisine ranges from French Toast, sausage and fruit for breakfast to Chicken Picata over pasta with Asparagus for dinner.

At the end of the trip, you help break down the boats and load the planes for the return to the King Salmon airport. By Saturday, you have experienced one of the finest wilderness fly-fishing float trips the world has to offer. With the abundant wildlife, wonderfully prepared meals, and the size and variety of fish landed, memories have been created that will last you a lifetime.
