American/Grizzly Creek, Alaska

The beauty of the American Creek is astounding. If you want to key in on large rainbows and char, experience solitude, see lots of bears, and you don't mind hard work, the American is for you. The American Creek is definitely one of the most scenic of the rivers we offer trips to.

The sockeye salmon do not spawn in the main rivers like the Alagnak or the Naknek Rivers. They swim through the main drainage into the smaller tributaries like the American to spawn. The bigger trout from the main river and lakes will follow the sockeye to feast, concentrating them in smaller areas and making them easier to find.

Trout are the main attraction of the American Creek. Where in other rivers the average size can start around 12-14 inches, here it starts at 18 and many can be caught in the 30 inch range as well.

Downed trees in the twists and turns of the river make access challenging to say the least. As the rafts get hung on rocks and other obstacles, you will assist the guides in moving the rafts past so as to reach the next great fishing spot that much sooner.

Toward the evening, you help set up camp and prepare dinner and unload boats. Camp includes over-sized tents with cots and a screened meal tent with tables and stools for your comfort. The cuisine ranges from Blueberry Pancakes and sausage for breakfast to Steak Au Poive with Garlic Mashed Potatoes for dinner.

At the end of the trip, you help break down the boats and load the planes for the return to the King Salmon airport. By Saturday, you have experienced one of the finest wilderness fly-fishing float trips the world has to offer. With the abundant wildlife, wonderfully prepared meals, and the size and variety of fish landed, memories have been created that will last you a lifetime.
