Alagnak River, Alaska

The Alagnak River is about 60 feet wide at the beginning and meanders through riffle after riffle over a beautiful gravel bottom. You will float nearly 36 miles of the Alagnak from its headwaters to the end of the "braids" section. The weather during this season is fairly mild with temperatures between 45-55 at night and 55-75 during the day. Rain is frequent and should be counted on when packing clothing for this trip.

Each trip begins on a Sunday morning at the King Salmon airport where you, your hosts and your guides will check bags and provisions onto the floatplane that will take you the lakes and the beginning of the trip. This flight will take about an hour and gives you a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape and the remoteness of the area.

Coming to Alaska to fly-fish is on nearly everyone's wish list, and for good reason. Most of the species of fish found in Alaska are larger than in most other locations and the Alagnak is no exception. The rainbow trout average 15-24 inches with others reaching up to 30 inches in length. Certain species of fish are better at certain times but the main attraction, Rainbow trout are great during any part of the season as are the Grayling. Along with these species, the Alagnak also offers premier fly-fishing for kings, sockeye, pink, chum and silver salmon during different times during the summer.

Toward the evening, you help set up camp and prepare dinner and unload boats. Camp includes over-sized tents with cots and a screened meal tent with tables and stools for your comfort. The cuisine ranges from cream cheese and shallot omelets for breakfast to Filet Mignon and Porcini Risotto for dinner.

At the end of the trip, you help break down the boats and load the planes for the return to the King Salmon airport. By Saturday, you have experienced one of the finest wilderness fly-fishing float trips the world has to offer. With the abundant wildlife, wonderfully prepared meals, and the size and variety of fish landed, memories have been created that will last you a lifetime.
